I THINK IT'S IMPORTANT TO DOCUMENT SIGNIFICANT FIRSTS IN YOUR LIFE.
YOUR FIRST KISS.
THE FIRST TIME YOU REALIZED WHAT YOU WANTED TO BE IN LIFE. YOUR FIRST PAYCHECK AT YOUR DREAM JOB. OR IN MY CASE, YOUR FIRST RUNWAY FASHION SHOW.
I'll be completely honest, the thought of attending a fashion show during Fashion Week in NYC seemed like a huge stretch. You either had to know someone who know's someone to get you on the list, be down with PR or Fashion Agencies, or request an invite amongst thousands of other fashion week hopefuls, weeks in advance to be able to get in. Since my trip was so last minute, it seemed like a daunting task to try to arrange entrance. I was really going for the fashion on the outside, so I was pretty content with the idea that I wasn't going to actually see a fashion show at fashion week...
But then friends. Really amazing friends.
One morning, I got a forwarded email from my old roommate in Los Angeles (Hi, Jasmine!), that contained an invite to upcoming designer, Lan Yu's fashion show. Jasmine is a stylist in LA, and while she had planned to come to NYC, things didn't go as planned, so she decided to share her invite with me! I was completely stoked and grateful for her kindness.
I RSPV'd on her behalf and excitedly awaited the date of the show! The show was held on my last day in NYC and was such an awesome ending to a really EPIC trip!
The show was held at the Skylight at Moynihan Station, the official venue for NYFW Shows. I arrived for the 7PM show and waited in line to scan my invite.
I was surprised to learn I had an actual seat assignment versus a standing seat! The crowd outside the venue was bustling with people waiting for the doors to open so that we could take our seats. You know what's an amazing feeling? The feeling of experiencing something for the first time – it never gets old.
They didn't allow us to be seated until about 8PM and everyone scurried to their seats as we entered the large dark auditorium. I found my seat assignment in the second row, in the middle of the venue, which gave me a perfect view! I was so excited I was snap-chatting everything in site, before whipping out my camera to test my lighting.
After waiting anxiously for what seemed like forever, the lights in the venue went completely black. In a flash, the runway illuminated and incredibly bright lights beamed overhead. Deep bass beats blared from the speakers and the models began to make their way onto the runway. I literally felt like a kid in a candy store, you have no idea, how awesome it felt to be sitting this close to a runway, during the middle of New York Fashion week! Not to mention I was documenting it with my beloved camera. It's definitely one of the coolest things I've done in the two year's I've been shooting as a photographer. I even had a celebrity sighting, singer Amerie was in attendance, and I got a selfie with her after the show! hastag priorities :)
I was also able to attend my first Fashion Presentation for Lela Rose, thanks to my friend Rachel! It was held in a intimate cafe, Cafe Paradiso in a beautiful SOHO neighborhood. I spotted a few of my fave bloggers in attendance, before they ushered us in to our seats. We were served a light lunch, before the preview of her newest collection began. It was pretty swanky, I must say. Rachel works for Moda Operandi, the luxury online retailer that allows their customers to purchase looks right after they appear on the runway (clutch, right?!). She had an extra ticket, and was gracious enough to extend the invite to me. I definitely felt a bit intimidated in such a smaller setting, which was reserved for the elite, but cherished the experience nonetheless!
