CURATING YOUR INSTA-STORY
With the never-ending introduction of new ways to share content, Instagram's release of Insta-Stories has slowly become one of my faves. So much so, that I've neglected my once-beloved Snapchat! (Sorry, not sorry!). Instagram has been one of my favorite places to share content, and with the addition of insta-stories, I feel that I am able to share a more intimate experience of my day-to-day with my followers. It especially makes it easier to share, since it's all rolled into one platform!
Recently, a lot of people have been messaging me to ask how I get my insta-story to look the way it does. I realized there are a few insta-story features, that people aren't aware of!. I decided to compile a quick little list of my favorite tips and tricks!
TELL A STORY
If you're using instagram for business, and looking to get more engagement, use your insta-story to let your followers learn more about you. Tell a story with what you're sharing. Some of my favorite instagrammers have super cool stories, that always make me want to send them a message or I get excited to watch what they've posted for the day. I personally love exploring and seeing new places, so accounts that give me a peek into something I wouldn't have typically known about intrigue me. So when i visit new places, or find a new book or something I think others would find interesting, I take a few seconds to snap a shot or a video and add it to my insta-stories.
The number one thing that I use to give my insta-story it's "look" is one of the instagram supplied filters. In order to apply this to your story, simply record a video, take or upload a photo, and then swipe right. There are tons of colored filters to choose from. The one I use, gives all my photos and videos a bright, desaturated look. (It's the filter right before the black and white one :)
I like to add a little flair to photos and video, so from time to time I use the brush tool to write or draw on my insta-stories. If you click the pencil shaped icon, and use the first brush option (adjusting the size of the brush to the smallest it will go), I find that it's easier to write or draw. I usually write things with a quick scribble, versus a slow stroke, and it comes out super fluid. I often get asked if I'm using a stylus, but no, I just use my finger. (It may also help if you naturally have nice handwriting.) I typically use the black and white brushes, but you can always change the color. Of course you can use the default colors at the bottom, but if you swipe right, you get a few more options. If you tap and hold a color, you can select a custom color of your choice. The same thing applies to the text tool! Gotta love options.
As I mentioned I love sharing new places I'm visiting, and rather than type in the location, I like to use the sticker feature in insta-story. Simply click the happy face icon at the top right, and select the location sticker (the first icon). By default the sticker is blue text on a white background. For me, it totally doesn't fit my minimalist vibe, so if you tap the sticker, you get the option of white text on a transparent grey background. This works with a lot of the stickers, if you tap it once, it'll show you a different colorway!
USE YOUR CAMERA
I've found that taking photos inside your story produces blurry images. I like to launch the native camera app (for me it's my iPhone) to take photos. Note, that with imported photos, IG will automatically ZOOM INTO the photo. To counteract this effect, I usually take a step back or raise my camera up, to capture MORe of the scene, so that nothing important is left out of the final photo. After I take the photo, I go back to my stories, and swipe up. I'm able to select from the most recent photos, and I select the one I just took. I then swipe right, to get my favorite filter, and VOILA!
